February 15, 2025 (New York, NY) Asian Wave Alliance (AWA), a nonpartisan political club, is urging Andrew Cuomo to run for New York City Mayor.
AWA had the opportunity to meet with the former governor to discuss the state of our city, and appreciated his interest in our concerns including: siting homeless and migrant shelters in residential neighborhoods, public safety and crime on our streets and subways, upholding quality of life, preserving and expanding the Specialized High Schools, using objective admissions for Gifted & Talented programs, sensible street design, regulating reckless e-bike/scooter cyclists, and Congestion Pricing.
AWA was impressed with Governor Cuomo’s depth of knowledge on the complexities of each issue along with his candor and pragmatism on potential solutions, and believes he would bring experience in navigating city and state politics and bureaucracy to address these problems.
The mayoral election is arguably more consequential to New Yorkers’ quality of life than national politics, with the spotlight on the Democratic primary this June. Since the winner of the Democratic primary will be chosen by ranked choice voting, it is imperative that the Asian American community have strong, experienced candidates to rank. With an extremist city council body that is unlikely to change much in November, our hope is for a mayor who will stand up for the middle class and represent our community’s priorities in City Hall.
“We recognize the significant commitment this decision entails,” said Donghui Zang, executive board member and a former Democratic candidate for City Council, “but in these challenging times, we need leaders who have a record of proven experience, accomplishments, and have a genuine commitment to their constituents which includes Asian New Yorkers. For those reasons, we strongly urge former Governor Cuomo to enter the democratic primary for Mayor.”
